L4

Peptide bond formation is an intrical function of the ribosome in context of protein translation. Along with L2 and, to a lesser extent, L3, L4 is involved in this catalytic process. The alpha helices of the N-terminal region are involved in the binding of rRNA, while the C-terminal site is projected to bind to the S10 mRNA operon. Through this binding, L4 also serves as in a regulatory role of transcription. The crystal structure shown above was isolated from the organism Themotoga maritima. (Worbs et al. 2000)
