The Biochemistry faculty at the University of Maryland, College Park,
are part of the Department of Chemistry
and Biochemistry, within the College of Chemical and
Life Sciences. Our situation as a small group within
a larger department means that graduate students are
part of a close-knit and supportive community but that
all the resources of a large research department and
university are available. In addition, the DC area
is home to NIH, NIST, and many other universities.
We provide rigorous graduate coursework in biochemical
and biophysical principles and techniques as well as
in molecular biology, genomics and proteomics, and
systems biology. Graduate research focuses on fostering
independence and expertise in answering cutting-edge
biochemistry questions. Research programs in the groups
highlighted here fall into the general areas of biophysical
chemistry, nucleic acid biochemistry, chemical biology,
and enzymes and molecular machines: click on the images
above for specifics. Our students go
on to successful academic, industrial, and government
careers in today’s
hi-tech world of biochemistry and biotechnology.
